There's no single magic number, but there is a wrong way to get this badly wrong in both directions. Too few full-length mocks and a student walks into the real exam having never actually practiced 3-hour pacing. Too many, packed too close together, and there's no time between papers to act on the feedback โ€” each mock just becomes another paper attempted the same way as the last, with nothing corrected in between.

A workable structure: about 8 papers over 12 weeks

A cadence that works for most Class 10 and 12 students spreads roughly 8 full-length papers per subject across the last 12 weeks before boards, with real evaluation time built in between each one:

  • Weeks 1-2 โ€” two diagnostic, half-syllabus papers per subject, to establish a baseline and flag foundational gaps early, before full-syllabus pressure sets in.
  • Weeks 3-8 โ€” three progressively harder full-syllabus papers, released roughly fortnightly, so there's time to review each scorecard and revise before the next one.
  • Weeks 9-11 โ€” two papers run exactly like the real board exam: same duration, same answer-sheet format, timed and invigilated in silence.
  • Week 12 โ€” one final pre-board simulation, attempted cold, three weeks out from the actual exam, followed by a strategy call rather than just a score.

Why the gaps between papers matter as much as the papers

The value of a mock test comes from what happens after it, not just during it. A paper returned within a few days, broken down by topic, gives a student a specific, ranked list of what to revise before the next one โ€” a paper that takes weeks to come back, or comes back as just a total score, doesn't. A 72-hour turnaround to a topic-wise scorecard is what makes an 8-paper, 12-week cycle actually work as a feedback loop, not just repeated exposure to the same mistakes.

What to avoid

Cramming most of the mocks into the final two or three weeks defeats the purpose โ€” there's no time left to fix what the feedback reveals. Equally, starting board-pattern full papers too early (before the syllabus is reasonably covered) mostly measures incomplete preparation rather than exam-hall readiness. The diagnostic-then-progressive-then-simulation sequence exists specifically to avoid both mistakes.
