Math Kangaroo runs six levels, each tied to a grade band: Pre-Ecolier and Ecolier (Grades 1-4), Benjamin and Cadet (Grades 5-8), and Junior and Student (Grades 9-12). Each level has its own paper, tuned in difficulty and question style to that age group, so a student always attempts the level matching their current grade.
Pre-Ecolier & Ecolier (Grades 1โ4)
The youngest levels focus on visual logic, number sense and pattern recognition, presented in a playful, low-pressure style. No prior competition experience is assumed โ these levels are specifically designed as an accessible first encounter with competitive mathematics.
Benjamin & Cadet (Grades 5โ8)
These middle levels introduce applied arithmetic, early geometry and multi-step logical reasoning. This is where Kangaroo starts to feel like genuine competition mathematics, while remaining accessible to a student without formal olympiad training.
Junior & Student (Grades 9โ12)
The most advanced levels apply algebra, geometry and combinatorics cleverly under real time pressure โ closer in spirit to AMC or SOF IMO than to the younger levels, though still distinctly Kangaroo in its playful problem style.
How to Choose the Right Level
Math Kangaroo levels are assigned by current grade, not by ability โ so the "choice" is really about confirming eligibility rather than picking a difficulty. A student always attempts the level matching their grade in the year of the exam.

Can a student attempt a level above their grade if they find their own level too easy?
Level assignment is generally based on current grade, so this typically isn't an option โ a student who finds their level accessible is usually well-positioned to move on to more advanced olympiad tracks like AMC or IOQM instead.
Does difficulty increase smoothly from Pre-Ecolier to Student, or are there big jumps?
The increase is generally gradual within each pair of levels (for example, Ecolier is a step up from Pre-Ecolier), with a more noticeable jump between the three broad bands โ this is by design, matching the developmental gap between those grade groups.
Is there an age cutoff within each grade band, similar to AMC?
Level eligibility is generally tied to current school grade rather than a strict age cutoff, though this can vary slightly by the local administering body โ worth confirming with your specific registration center.
