Where the 80 marks actually sit

Most students revise Maths chapter by chapter in textbook order, giving Real Numbers the same time as Quadratic Equations. The paper does not treat them equally. Compare it with the latest CBSE sample paper and the current syllabus before you build a schedule.

Two things stand out. Algebra alone is worth about a quarter of the paper, so a student who is shaky on Quadratic Equations or Arithmetic Progressions is exposed in a way that a weak Real Numbers chapter never exposes them. And Algebra, Geometry and Trigonometry together add up to roughly 59% of the paper. A student who is strong there and only average elsewhere can still reach a very good result.

Standard Maths or Basic Maths

CBSE offers Class 10 Maths at two levels. Standard is the regular paper. Basic is set at an easier level for students who do not plan to study Maths further. The choice is made by the student and the school, usually well before the exam, and it is worth making with the Class 11 stream in mind. Many schools expect Standard Maths for a student who wants Maths in Class 11, particularly for the Science stream, but the policy differs between schools, so ask yours and confirm on the official CBSE circular.

For the rest of this guide, the unit weightage applies to the general structure of the paper. If your child is sitting Basic Maths, the units are similar but the difficulty of questions is lower, so check the Basic sample paper for the exact split. A student who is undecided between the two should not use the weightage table as the deciding factor. The Class 11 plan is the deciding factor.

How step-marking changes how you should write

Board answers are marked against a scheme that gives credit for each correct step: the formula, the substitution, the intermediate result and the final answer with its unit. That is the reason the same problem can get 3 out of 3 from one student and 1 out of 3 from another, even when both reach the same number.   • Write the formula before substituting. Even a wrong number after a correct formula tends to keep part of the credit.
  • Show every algebraic move on a new line. Jumping from step two to the answer removes the evidence an examiner needs to award marks.
  • Label your work. In Trigonometry and Mensuration, a neat, labelled diagram is often the first thing marked.
  • State the final answer with units where the question gives a physical quantity, and round only when the question tells you to.
  • For proofs, write the given, the to-prove and a reason beside each line. A correct proof with missing reasons loses marks.

Consider a typical three-mark question on a pair of linear equations. A student who writes the two equations from the word problem, picks a method, eliminates one variable, finds the second and states the answer in words has left an examiner five or six places to give credit. A student who writes only the two final values has left one. If the final values are right, most examiners will be generous, but nobody can promise that, and the risk is entirely avoidable. Habits like these are cheap to build in weeks and expensive to lack on the day.

What to drill first with about eight weeks left

Suppose your child has about eight weeks before the first paper. That is enough for a serious, structured push, but not enough to revise every chapter to the same depth. Use the weightage to decide the order.

Weeks 1-2: diagnose, then triage

Sit one full 80-mark paper under time. Mark it strictly. Then group every lost mark by unit and by cause: concept gap, calculation slip, or misread question. The result is a short list of two to four chapters that cost the most marks. Those chapters drive the next three weeks. Skip this step and you will revise what feels comfortable rather than what is costing marks.

Weeks 3-5: drill the high-weightage units

  • Algebra first. Quadratic Equations (factorisation, formula, word problems), Pair of Linear Equations (all three methods and the consistency conditions), Arithmetic Progressions (nth term, sum, and the word-problem set-ups) and Polynomials (zeroes and coefficients).
  • Trigonometry second. Identities, standard values and the height-and-distance problems. Most marks are lost in the set-up, not the arithmetic, so draw the figure before you write anything.
  • Geometry third. Similar triangles and the proofs around them, then tangent-to-a-circle results. Learn each theorem with its converse and the typical figure.
  • Statistics & Probability and Mensuration next. Mean, median and mode from grouped data, and the standard surface-area and volume combinations. These reward formula recall and clean arithmetic.

Weeks 6-8: full papers and exam strategy

Move to full-length papers in board format. A three-hour paper gives you time for a first pass, a second pass and a short review only if you have practised the order. Attempt the one-mark and assertion-reason questions in the first stretch, protect enough time for the longer answers, and leave the hardest case-based question until you have banked the certain marks. The paper pattern in one paragraph

As per the pattern reported for 2026-27, about 50% of the paper is competency-based questions, about 20% is MCQs and about 30% is short and long answer. Check the current sample paper for the latest version. In practice this means a student cannot rely on rote-learning solved examples. A question on Arithmetic Progressions may arrive as a story about seating in a hall or savings over months, and the first mark goes to whoever spots that it is an AP problem.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Giving every chapter equal time. Real Numbers and Coordinate Geometry are worth about six marks each. Quadratic Equations and Arithmetic Progressions sit inside the 20-mark Algebra block.
  • Practising only solved examples. A student who recognises the printed example but not a reworded version has memorised, not learned.
  • Drawing figures carelessly. A rough, unlabelled diagram in Trigonometry or Circles produces wrong set-ups and loses the diagram marks.
  • Skipping the last line. Many answers stop at a value of x when the question asks for a length, an age or a price.
  • Leaving Statistics for last. Grouped-data questions are calculation-heavy and reward practice. A student who starts them in the final week makes avoidable slips.
  • Not counting internal marks. Twenty of the hundred marks come from internal assessment. Ask the school how it is being recorded so that theory is not carrying the whole load.

  • Ask your child to explain one solved problem out loud each day. If they cannot explain why the first step is the first step, the method is memorised rather than understood.
  • Keep an error notebook with one line per lost mark. Three lines in the same unit is a chapter to revisit before the next mock.
  • Practise the last five minutes of the paper. Check units, check that every sub-part is answered and check the diagram labels. It is the cheapest source of marks in the whole exam.
