Look at the shape of it. Chemistry and Biology are each about a third of the paper on their own, and Physics is close to it. Students who love one science and treat another as a chore are choosing to leave twenty-five-odd marks on the table. The heaviest single chapters are inside Chemistry and the World of Living: Carbon and its Compounds, Life Processes, Acids, Bases and Salts, and Electricity are the ones where a shaky base costs the most.
A week-by-week plan across the three sciences
Below is an eight-week structure for the final stretch. Adjust it once the date sheet is out; it is expected around November-December 2026, and no exam dates should be assumed until then. The rule underneath the plan is simple: every week touches Physics, Chemistry and Biology, so that nothing goes cold.
Weeks 1-2: diagnostic and triage
Sit a full 80-mark Science paper under time and mark it strictly. Tag every lost mark: concept gap, wording error (you knew it but wrote it loosely), diagram error, or numerical slip. Then split your weak chapters into three buckets: rebuild (concept not clear), sharpen (concept clear, accuracy poor) and maintain (fine). Reread the NCERT text of the rebuild chapters, line by line, and solve the in-text questions before touching any reference material.
Weeks 3-5: drill the heavy units
- Week 3, Chemistry. Balancing and types of reactions; acid-base indicators, pH and salts; reactivity series and metal reactions; then Carbon and its Compounds, including nomenclature, functional groups and the ethanol and ethanoic acid reactions. Write every equation with state symbols where the textbook uses them.
- Week 4, Biology. Life Processes with the standard diagrams and flow of blood and transport; Control and Coordination (nervous system, reflex arc, hormones); Reproduction (asexual methods, flower structure, human reproductive system) and Heredity (Mendel's crosses and sex determination). Practise the reason-style answers, since these are where wording is judged.
- Week 5, Physics. Ray diagrams for mirrors and lenses, sign convention, mirror and lens formulae, and the human eye; then Electricity numericals (Ohm's law, series and parallel combinations, power and energy) and the Magnetic Effects chapter with its field-line diagrams and rules.
Weeks 6-8: full papers, then repair
Now the plan flips from chapters to papers. Attempt two or three full board-pattern Science papers a week under timed conditions and spend as much time reviewing them as writing them. Each review ends with three actions: a short redo of the lost questions, a correction to the error log, and one re-read of the NCERT paragraph where the wrong idea began. In the last week, do only light revision, diagrams and one short paper. NCERT-line accuracy: the habit that quietly earns marks
The CBSE Science paper is built on the NCERT textbooks. Definitions, statements of laws, reasons for observations and the steps of a process are marked against the ideas in those pages. A student who writes 'the heart pumps blood' when the textbook says the heart receives oxygenated blood from the lungs and pumps it to the body has said something true but incomplete, and the incomplete part is where the mark sits.
- Read the NCERT paragraph, not the summary. Definitions in guides are often paraphrased, and a paraphrase can drop the key term.
- Learn the key term in each sentence. For example, in a reasoning answer the mark usually hangs on one or two words, such as the name of a process or a property.
- Practise writing from memory. Take a chapter, close the book, write the definitions and the reasons, then compare. The gaps are your revision list.
- Do the in-text and end-of-chapter questions. Many board questions are close relatives of them, and assertion-reason items often turn on an NCERT statement.
Diagrams: the quickest marks in the paper
A labelled diagram usually takes two to three minutes and can earn marks for very little writing. The standard set to practise is the ray diagrams for concave and convex mirrors and lenses, the human eye, dispersion of light through a prism, simple electric circuits with a correct symbol for each component, magnetic field lines, the human heart, the excretory system, the reflex arc, the alimentary canal and the longitudinal section of a flower. Draw each three times from memory, with a pencil, a scale and clean labels with straight guide lines.
For ray diagrams, the arrowheads and the position of the image are what get checked. For biology diagrams, correct labels matter more than artwork. If a diagram is asked, draw it, even when you feel unsure of every label, because a partly labelled diagram earns more than a blank space.
Numericals and reasoning answers: two skills that need daily reps
Two kinds of questions separate students who know the chapters from students who score in them. The first is the numerical, mostly in Electricity and Light. The method is always the same: write the given quantities with units, write the formula, substitute, solve, and state the answer with its unit. A short daily set of four or five numericals, checked the same evening, is far more effective than a two-hour session on Sunday. In light, sign convention is the recurring trap; write it out once at the top of the working, and most errors disappear.
The second is the reasoning answer, common in Biology and Chemistry: why is the small intestine long, why does a metal displace another, why is a lens said to converge. A good answer is two or three lines, opens with the key term and finishes with the consequence. Practise by asking 'so what?' after every statement you write, until the sentence reaches the effect the question wants. Students who answer reasoning questions with a definition instead of a reason lose marks in nearly every paper.
What the paper looks like
As per the pattern reported for 2026-27, about 50% of the paper is competency-based, about 20% is MCQs and about 30% is short and long answer. Check the current sample paper for the latest version. That mix means the paper will test whether a student can apply a concept to a new situation, such as a case about a soil sample, a household circuit or an experiment on a plant. Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Favouring one science. A student who revises Physics for a week and skips Biology is gambling with about a third of the marks.
- Reading instead of writing. Reading a chapter for the fifth time feels productive. Writing the answers from memory is the activity that shows what you know.
- Skipping the equations. Balanced chemical equations are marked for both the formulae and the balancing. Practise them daily.
- Unlabelled or wrongly labelled diagrams. The shape is not the point; the labels are.
- Ignoring numericals until the last week. Electricity and light numericals need repetition. A short daily set beats one long weekend session.
- Not checking units. Ohm, ampere, watt, joule and dioptre should appear with every numerical answer.

- Keep a one-page sheet per science. Physics: formulae and sign conventions. Chemistry: key reactions and colour changes. Biology: diagrams and definitions. Read it every morning in the last fortnight.
- Explain a diagram to someone. Ask your child to talk through the path of blood, or a ray through a lens, out loud. Hesitation exposes the gap faster than rereading.
- Never leave a mock unreviewed. A paper that is marked but not understood is one wasted paper.
