In Maths, the case-based items typically wrap a familiar calculus, probability or matrix idea in a real-life scenario, so fluency in the underlying chapters matters more than any special trick.

Step Marking: How to Write a Solution

A practical way to think about a written Maths solution is as a short argument with a beginning, a middle and an end. The beginning states what you are going to use. The middle transforms the problem one clear step at a time. The end states the answer in the form the question asked for.

  • Write the rule or formula first. For integration by parts, write the formula before substituting. For a shortest-distance question in 3D, write the formula for the lines involved.
  • Show each transformation on its own line. One step, one line. It costs almost no extra time and protects your marks.
  • Keep substitutions visible. When you substitute a variable in an integral, write the new limits alongside for a definite integral, and change back for an indefinite one.
  • Draw the figure when a question is geometric. For area under a curve, a sketch of the region with the limits marked is often part of the marks. For a linear programming problem, the shaded feasible region and a table of corner points are what the marker is looking for.
  • End with a conclusion. Write the final answer in a sentence or a boxed line, with units or context where the question has any.
  • Do not overwrite. If a step is wrong, strike it through once and continue. A messy page hides your correct work.

Where the Reliable Returns Are

Calculus

Calculus covers continuity and differentiability, applications of derivatives, integrals, applications of integrals and differential equations, and it has been the largest unit by marks in recent distributions (approximately 35 of 80; verify with the current sample paper). It is also the unit where patient practice pays off most. The techniques are finite: standard integrals, substitution, integration by parts, partial fractions and a few special forms. Differentiation follows a small set of rules, and applications such as tangents, rate of change and maxima and minima follow recognisable templates. Area under curves and first-order differential equations are standard scoring questions for students who have practised drawing and solving them.

  • Integrals: sort every problem by technique, not by chapter order. Practise recognising which method applies within ten seconds.
  • Applications of derivatives: for maxima and minima, always verify with a second-derivative test and state the conclusion.
  • Differential equations: write the type (variable separable, homogeneous, linear), the method, and the constant of integration explicitly.
  • Applications of integrals: sketch first, mark limits, then integrate. Students who skip the sketch commonly get the wrong limits.

Vectors and 3D Geometry

This unit has carried roughly 14 marks in recent distributions (approximate; verify with the current sample paper), and it is a good example of a chapter that feels hard until the patterns click. Vector algebra rests on dot and cross products and their geometric meanings. Three-dimensional geometry rests on direction ratios, equations of lines (and planes, as listed in the current syllabus), and a small set of distance and angle formulas. Because so many questions are formula-driven, this is a unit where a clean formula sheet and daily short practice pay off quickly. Watch for common traps: mixing direction ratios with direction cosines, reversing the order in a cross product, and mishandling skew lines.

The smaller chapters that still matter

Relations and functions with inverse trigonometric functions, matrices and determinants, probability and linear programming (as listed in the current syllabus) carry fewer marks each, but they are among the most predictable. Matrices and determinants reward accurate arithmetic and a habit of checking. Probability rewards careful reading of the question and correct use of conditional probability, Bayes' theorem and distributions. Linear programming rewards a clean graph and a corner-point table. The Internal Assessment: 20 Marks

Maths carries 20 marks for internal assessment, in place of the 30 practical marks that Physics, Chemistry and Biology carry. It is usually built from periodic tests and mathematics activities with a record and viva, though the exact components are set by CBSE and implemented by your school, so check your school's circular. Treat it as nearly free marks: complete the activity file neatly, be ready to explain each activity, and do not let it slide because it sits outside the main paper.

How to Spend the Last Weeks

If you have eight weeks or fewer, a simple structure keeps Maths on track. In the first fortnight, take a full-length paper and sort every chapter into secure, patchable or weak. In the middle three weeks, drill calculus, vectors and 3D, and the patchable chapters, in daily blocks: a warm-up of ten quick problems, a timed set of longer questions, and a review of errors. In the final three weeks, sit a full paper on alternate days under the real time limit and review it the same day.

  • Warm-up (15 minutes): ten quick derivatives, integrals or formula recalls to keep speed high.
  • Main block (60-75 minutes): a timed set from one or two chapters, written in full.
  • Review (30 minutes): mark against the scheme. Log each error with the reason, such as a sign slip, a wrong limit, or an unknown formula.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Skipping the sketch. In area, LPP and geometry questions, the diagram is part of the solution.
  • Forgetting the constant of integration. It is a small omission that costs a mark in indefinite integrals and differential equations.
  • Changing variables but not limits. In a definite integral with substitution, either change the limits or revert before applying them.
  • Reading the question too fast. In probability and case-based questions, misreading one condition sinks the whole answer.
  • Practising only the chapters you like. The comfortable chapters are usually the ones already secure.
  • Not timing yourself. Untimed practice hides the fact that a five-mark question takes you fifteen minutes.
